The challenge
Agitator drives: The agitators M1101, M1104, M2101 and M2104 on the No. 1 and No. 2 multi-carbon alcohol units are driven by high-voltage explosion-proof motors through Flender gearboxes, and they run continuously. If an agitator stops, the reaction has to stop too.
A continuous reaction cannot pause
The agitator drives run around the clock, and an unplanned stop of any one of them interrupts the reaction and affects the whole unit.
Rounds on the unit deck are limited
The drives sit on the unit deck in an explosion-proof area, where manual rounds are limited in frequency and time.
Wear in large drives builds quietly
Early wear in the high-voltage motors, gearboxes and agitator bearings grows during operation and is hard to catch with manual checks.

The agitator shafts' vibration level and temperature are sampled on a fixed schedule and compared with their own baseline, so anomalies surface before a manual inspection would find them.
